Layers of Exuberance was a public performance created for Art in Odd Places 2022: DRESS. A stack of four bright orange hoop-skirt forms made its way down 14th Street, creating a manifestation of spectacle that defied expectations and challenged the boundaries of conventional expression through attire.
The work invited the incidental audience of the urban sidewalk to reexamine perceptions of public presentation, movement, and self-expression. As the orange form progressed through the street, its layered structure created a remarkable visual tableau, captivating the attention of passersby while transforming the mundane act of walking into an act of improvisational, site-specific choreography.
The skirts swirled and flowed in response to the air of the city, moments of stillness, and the rhythmic action of walking. In motion, the form became an extravagant, altered architecture moving through public space.
A dress is a living architecture of the body, one that frames, accentuates, shapes, alters, and adorns the human form. In the form of an oversized hoop structure, Layers of Exuberance carved out an exuberant constructed body within the city. The bright orange materials nodded to the ongoing construction of New York City, and to the ongoing construction of all bodies as they move through time and place.
The skirt referenced textile and architectural histories that reshape physical space, as well as the ways dress can be used to experience both autonomy and repression. The oversized hoop form became at once celebratory and obstructive, playful and spatially assertive. It expanded the body beyond ordinary limits, requiring the city to make room for a figure that refused to move invisibly.
The work did not depend on direct verbal interaction. Instead, engagement occurred through observation, proximity, interruption, and discovery. Pedestrians encountered the orange entity as part of the flow of the sidewalk: some paused, some watched, some adjusted their movement, and others continued on. The performance existed within those shifting responses, using dress as both sculptural form and social gesture.
Layers of Exuberance celebrated individuality and fearlessly embraced eccentricity, reminding us of the power of art to transcend the ordinary and spark conversations about identity, creativity, visibility, and public presence.
