Outside of the Art+Design building at SUNY Purchase, sounds emanate from a giant ten by fifty foot grate. You approach, look into its depths, and see a sequenced projection bathing the expansive floor two stories below your feet. You walk out onto the grate experiencing the upward draft blowing into your face as you look down through the view that is limited by the grid you stand upon. Suddenly you realize that as you walk, you trigger wires connected to contact microphones. Your footsteps contribute to the sounds that echo up from the cavern below. More people come to investigate the grate, adding to the chorus of sounds as they each view their restricted portion of the video projected on the floor far beneath them. This experiment in perception, depth, participation and event occurred for only two hours one evening in May.
